“The decision made by Sony and participating theaters allows people to make their own choices about the film, and we welcome that outcome," the White House said By M. Bilal Kenasari WASHINGTON The White House welcomed a decision by Sony Pictures to release a controversial comedy movie in theaters beginning Christmas Day, a White House spokesman said Tuesday. “As the president made clear, we are a country that believes in free speech, and the right of artistic expression,” said Eric Schultz, a White House spokesman. “The decision made by Sony and participating theaters allows people to make their own choices about the film, and we welcome that outcome." Sony’s move reverses its decision last week to canceled the release of “The Interview” after a group of hackers threatened 9/11-type attacks on theaters showing the movie whose plot involves the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. The hackers who call themselves Guardians of Peace, conducted a cyber attack on Sony studios last month and released sensitive company information, including employee salaries, email exchange between executives and several as yet-to-be released films. The FBI blamed the attack on North Korea, which promptly denied any involvement on the security breach.
